5 Songs to Get You Through Rough Times

If you’re anything like me right now, then chances are you’re probably feeling a little rough. I know a lot of people turn to movies and games when they’re feeling particularly down. But I find that if there’s one thing to get me through life, during both the good and the bad, it’s music. The amazing thing about music is that it can cheer you up, get you pumped, calm you down, or just reflect your mood at any given moment. While I don’t have a particular cheer up playlist, I thought I would cobble together some songs that I like to listen to when life’s got me down. It’s a mixture of genres, so hopefully there’s something for everyone.

“Keep On Keeping On” – Colony House

This is my go-to when it comes to picking myself up. What I love about the track is that isn’t it cheery in its tone, it feels real. Life is shitty and always will be, but the least you can do is keep moving and not let it get to you. That’s what it says to me. Caleb Champman, in particular, is a highlight with his amazing voice.

“I Want To Know What Love Is” – Amason

While the original by Foreigner is considered by some to be an 80s classic, the cover by Swedish indie band Amason is a new favourite of mine. Listening to this might seem counter-intuitive to making you feel better, but I find this version of the song so serene that it makes me feel peaceful. Maybe in a “In love with my sorrow” kind of way. Plus the music video is a lot of fun, in a “This is weird” kind of way.

“Don’t Stop Me Now” – Queen

Bohemian Rhapsody would make a great entry in this list, but Don’t Stop Me Now is pure joy. Everything from the melody to Freddie Mercury’s amazing voice keeps your spirits high in spite everything else going on in your life. I don’t have anything else to say, just shut up and listen.

“We’ll Meet Again” – Vera Lynn

I want this song played at my funeral. That’s how much I love this song. I think the reason why this song helps me through difficult times is when I think of its significance.  When it was released in 1939, the world was entering World War II, one of our darkest times in human history. And yet despite the bleak future and the uncertainty, the song has an optimistic air that everyone needs to make it through hard times. A true classic, and a beautiful song too.

“Shake It Out” – Florence + The Machine

Most of Florence’s songs can get your spirits up, which is funny considering the subject matter of some of them. But if there’s one song that is meant to get you moving and throw your cares away, it’s “Shake It Out.” I’ve seen Florence live three times now and the audience is jumping around with her whenever she sings this fantastic tune. So if you’re feeling particularly low, put this on and hopefully you’ll be shaking everything out as well.

Obviously, everyone has their ideas of good music for those moments when life has got you down, and I’d be curious to hear some other recommendations. I hope you enjoy what I’ve recommended in the meantime and feel better soon.
